Chinese Hamsters make fantastic pets, there is no doubt about it. They are small, low maintenance, personable and entertaining animals that are also suitable for younger animal lovers. However, do not rush out and purchase your hamster just yet; take the time to consider if this is really the pet for you.
Things to consider include...
-That the cage will need weekly cleaning.
-That food and water must be changed daily.
-That these are small, delicate animals that can be seriously injured in the hands of a young child or if handled roughly.
-That these are fast and can dart out of your hands.
-That they only live for 2-4 years.
-That, although they are personable, will not be emotionally dependent on you, like a dog.
-That Chinese hamsters can or can't make wonderful pets for children. I do not recommend them for young children, who tend to be a little boisterous. Also, if the hamster has a little nibble of their finger, they may drop the pet, resulting in a broken spine which will mean the animal is in great pain and has to be put to sleep. Chinese hamsters are good pets for older children, preferably mature children aged 10+. If a younger child is handling and older child's or parent's hamster, tell them to sit on the floor and close all doors to the room. Children aged under 6 should not be allowed to handle hamsters.
-That Chinese hamsters are inexpensive so cost is usually not an issue, the whole hamster setup, food supply, hamster and caging usually costing only about £40-£50.
